If you’re struggling with anxiety, you’re not alone. Anxiety disorders have become the most common mental health concern in Canada with one in 10 Canadians being affected.

There are many types of anxiety disorders and the symptoms and severity are different for everyone, but at the heart of anxiety are extreme feelings of worry, dread, and fear. When they are occurring, these feelings can seem insurmountable, however, with support from an experienced anxiety counsellor, these feelings can be managed and treated.

What is Anxiety?

If you’ve been in a stressful or unknown situation, you probably felt nervous, overwhelmed, or worried. This is anxiety and it’s a normal, healthy reaction to facing a problem or threat. However, sometimes we feel anxious when there’s nothing stressful to trigger it. If you're having extreme feelings of worry, fear, or panic, during everyday life activities, you could be suffering from an anxiety disorder.

When anxiety is occurring often enough to become a disorder, you may find yourself feeling so overwhelmed or with such strong feelings of dread on a regular basis that your day-to-day life is being negatively impacted.

The Three Types Of Anxiety Symptoms

Everyone experiences anxiety differently and will show different symptoms. However, some symptoms appear frequently among most people experiencing anxiety.

These symptoms can be broken into three categories: Physical, Cognitive, and Behavioural. You may experience symptoms in only one category or in all three.

Physical Symptoms - What You Feel

Physical symptoms are what happens in your body when you experience anxiety. These are automatic responses and can’t be controlled. These can look like:

The Three Types of Anxiety Symptoms
  • A racing heart

  • Quick, shallow breathing

  • Sweating

  • Changes in sleep patterns - always feeling tired or being unable to sleep

  • Nightmares or night terrors

  • Headaches

  • Muscle tension

Cognitive Symptoms - What You Think

Cognitive symptoms are what happens in your mind when you experience anxiety. These thoughts can appear when you’re going through or remembering a traumatic or anxious event. These include:

  • Trouble focusing

  • Feelings of panic or dread

  • Feeling stressed, tense, or restless

  • Thinking that the worst-case scenario is going to happen

  • Obsessive thoughts and overthinking situations

  • Inability to remember things or having your mind go blank

Behavioural Symptoms - How You Act

Behavioural symptoms are the actions you take in response to experiencing anxiety. Some occur automatically through our nervous system and some are actions we use to cope. These can include:

  • Inability to be still or stay calm

  • Fidgeting, pacing, moving uncontrollably

  • Withdrawing from social interactions

  • Feeling irritable and irate

  • Increased startle response

  • Not being able to meet responsibilities at home, work, or school

  • Use of drugs or alcohol to reduce anxious feelings and thoughts
